Is your nearest Coinstar location the best one for you?

Before you go and turn your coins into cash, learn which Coinstar service is most valuable to you.

Pro Tip:

Not all Coinstar locations offer the same services. So your closest location may not be the one you need.

What is a Coinstar kiosk?

Coinstar owns and operates the largest network of automated coin-counting kiosks distributed throughout the US and other international locations. They have more than 21,000 kiosks and provide counting services to:

  • Grocery stores
  • Drug stores
  • Financial institutions
  • Mass merchants

You can easily cash your loose change at a Coinstar location. It’s quite simple: just add your coins to the tray, lift the handle and let them do the rest.

How do their kiosks work?

All Coinstar kiosks offer a coins-to-cash service. In addition, each location may offer other coin-counting services including turning your coins into:

  1. Cash
  2. No-fee gift cards
  3. Charity donations

These services vary by location, so it’s best to look up the kiosk of your choice to make sure it has the service you need.

1. Cash vouchers

If you choose to turn your coins into cash, the Coinstar machine will print out a cash voucher. All you need to do to get your money is take the voucher to the store’s cashier to cash it.

This receipt is as good as cash, so cash it as soon as you get it.  If you lose it, you won’t be able to get a refund.

2. Electronic gift cards

You can convert your coins into a no-fee electronic gift card, which Coinstar calls eGift Cards. The card is printed out on paper, just like a receipt, and comes with a unique code printed at the top.

Use this printed code whenever you want to shop at the store, restaurant or online merchant you selected for your gift card.

3. Charity donations

You can donate your coins to get a tax deduction for yourself and help others in need. What’s more, you won’t be charged a fee when you choose to donate your change.

No amount of change is too small. Coinstar will accept any donation.

They’ve partnered with several nonprofit charities, including:

  • American Red Cross
  • Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals®
  • Feeding America
  • Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
  • The Humane Society of the United States
  • The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)
  • United Way
  • World Wildlife Fund

It’s a nice list, but not all the charities are available on every Coinstar location. So if you have a preference, look up the kiosk near you before you go.

If you decide to make a charitable donation, Coinstar will provide you with a receipt for your records. Save it for the next tax season, since you donation is tax-deductible.

How to find a no-fee Coinstar location

Coinstar will charge you an up to 11.9% processing fee to turn your coins into cash. To put it into perspective, if you have $150 worth of change, you’ll pay a service fee close to $18.

That’s a high fee, but Coinstar knows that you don’t know exactly how much change you have with you. That’s why you’re searching for a kiosk near you in the first place, right? You won’t know your actual dollar cost until after you’ve poured in you coins.

But why hand over that money when you can easily avoid the fee?

Avoid fees:

To avoid paying a processing fee, choose to turn your coins into a gift card. You have multiple brands to choose from, including Amazon.

The rub, though, is that not all Coinstar locations offer gift cards

So it’s best to do a little research on the kiosks near you to make sure you choose a location offering a gift card option.
